Did you miss your morning run last Thanksgiving? Good news! The Alexandria Turkey Trot is back on for 2021. Its outdoor format makes the race possible once again, even with the thousands of runners who typically turn out. If you don’t have Thanksgiving morning plans, now is the perfect time to sign up.
The five-mile race kicks off along Mount Vernon Ave near the intersection of Braddock Road and finishes right around the corner. You’re welcome to walk or run the course, which winds through Alexandria and past some of the city’s famous sites. Just make sure you keep up a good clip if you walk—walkers must keep at least a 15-minute pace in order to finish the Alexandria Turkey Trot on time. Don’t forget to come with your food donation in hand! Runners of the race traditionally donate two non-perishable food items to a local food bank in the spirit of the season. You can drop them off at the GW Middle School gym before you head to the starting line. Then get ready to sweat your way through the start of Turkey Day—it’ll make that pumpkin pie taste all the much sweeter later!
